This game was only released earlier this month (March 5th) and it already has over 1,500 subscribers, the main page can be a bit slow at times.

The game is completely free and the size of the download is around 400MB, you can buy a subscription which lets you hunt other types of deer which is how the company will profit from the game. The game has just come out of Beta and already has over 1200 subscribed users in just a month! Here are some videos http://www.thehunter.com/pub/video.php

Here are some pics I took whilst in game. The fps I get is around 120fps in 1920x1200 all max detail too - thats how well tuned this game is. To be honest I have never seen a game engine run so well with this level of detail :)

    Can you die?

Does anything come after you, or do you just wander around looking for deer?

How big is the play area, approximately?

There are currently 2 islands as the large one hasn't been released yet, the smallest island takes around 6 human hours to walk around. Here is the small island with the red house on it, the black house is north island (two diff places):

And this is the large island

The large island is coming out soon, they are also adding jeeps (the roads are already built).

Tried this for a couple of hours last week. Definetly not newbie friendly. Next to no instructions, nor is there a decent inbuilt tutorial.

Spent the good part of an hour and a half tracking a deer only to find absolutely no trace of it. Be aware that you will need extreme amounts of patience to succeed in this game.

I will say one thing, the games engine is brilliantly done. Rivals anything out there at the momment, extremely stable, fast and great looking visuals

After installing the emote launcher you click 'Download The Hunter' and point it to the emote launcher you installed.
10% to go at about 150 KB/s so far.

Was wandering around not knowing what the hell I was doing. Just followed a path saw a red glow, pressed TASB for GPS left click scanned. followed trail and same again. Saw the 3rd red glow. Snuck up to it scanned it and just used the caller then shot the deer who appeared. Scanned it and happy that I had finished the mission I accepted from the message guy on the website I left the reserve to and checked my status on the website.
apparently I tracked the mule deer but didn't spot or shoot a mule deer.
Guess I must have shot something else instead.

the graphics do look sweet. what engine are they running?

Would play if it did have dinosaurs, don't really like slaughtering innocent animals, unlike dinosaurs, who are hell demons roaming the earth.

Definitely not for the casual easily bored gamer. But if you re into serious huntign this game is the bees knees. Very realistic, and i love how the Deer are animated with their sniffing the air, scratching themselves etc, really adds to it.

Environment looks epic as well, though I wish I could extend the detail distance but they said that will come as they update it further.

Been roaming the island for a while now following track after track and haven't seen anything.

Do you have to do the call or can you randomly see deers in the dstance occasionally?

    a) NEVER run unless you don't ever want to see anything.
    b) use the caller regularly.

I usually find a nice place which is well hidden, and downwind of an open space. I thin use the caller and within a few mins I usually get a reply. That deer should investigate and BOOM, headshot.

Have had 3 deer at once appear using that method. The whole tracking one by following its trail has never worked for me.

Like ospi says, never run... there are some awesome tips on their forum from real life hunters that use the same techniques in game. I often see a deer within the first 15mins.

Something I really like is the wind and how you can determine its direction by the way the trees, grass and falling leaves blow as they descend from the trees.

I can't wait till MP is introduced and jeeps :)
