The 'Raspberry Pi' thread

Hooray, I now have 3 x Pi4 (4GB) in FLiRC cases. Ready to start up my little home server farm.

Looking for ideas to justify it now!

 

1. tinker
2. home automation
3 . pi hole
???

 

Definitely going to move Pi Hole from the dedicated RPi 1 it's on now. Can feel the latency from it so I'm hoping running it on better hardware will help.

I think my only real goal is to learn about containers with it.

I think I saw this over on ETA Prime. Was a kickstarter that failed, and someone bought them all and rebadged them or something?

Looks good. Couldn't see a way to ship to AU when I checked their site a week or so back, but will check again. I'm hoping we see a lot more of these soon. (They make awesome portable KVMs and crash carts too).

I think downside for this one was the USB3 video is still a bit slow, but that's fine for anyone who doesn't need media (I'm looking for a lightweight work solution that's more flexible than a normal Chromebook type device).

 

So... it's a "laptop" with an external computer.

More of a battery docking station.

 

Yeah pretty much. I was hoping for others where there was space to pop the Pi inside, but these are still cool.

Again, KVM/crash-cart as well, which is useful for my work.

 

So it doesn't use the PI's hdmi ports? That's a bit odd.

Those pi compute cards... They're the whole pi with an edge connector, right? Wouldn't they be more suited to a laptop role?

 

Not really. What makes them useful is that you can plug lots of them into a board that has heaps of GPIO and other things, and none of it cares about video because it's all CLI and remote access stuff.

So if you made a laptop out of it, you'd need to fabricate the other part with all the IO and video chips and stuff.

May as well just make a "dumb" device with internal USB and HDMI connectors, and connect in to any single board computer (doesn't have to be limited to an RPi). Only really clever stuff you'd want to add is some way to tell the device when the lid is closed and it needs to go into low power (could be as simple as a switch that triggers the USB keyboard sleep button on close).

I dunno... I've been accused of having a few personalities. I guess one more doesn't hurt?

 

So it'd need a basic "motherboard", but other than that, it's still the same SOC?

In which case, why hasn't anyone made it yet?
An upgradable netbooky thing would be pretty popular, I'd expect.

Is it just me or does ETA Prime sound the same as DT (DistroTube), or do all yanks sound the same?

$70USD just buy one and open it up, should be able to fit a Pi in there.

 

Way more effort than I am willing to commit. I sold my pi4 too. For half the price the vodafonetv does exactly what I want.
Pity they won't get android certified, but I get it. They want to sell educational computers, not entertainment units.

Still got the orangepizero pihole though.

 

Yeah that's it. I hear a fair bit of criticism over the RPi from folks that it's "too difficult" or "too nerdy", which is incredibly ironic given that the whole point was to try and build technical literacy via a "tinkerer" device, similar to the "good old days" of microcomputers.

It's designed to be exactly that - something made by tinkerers for tinkerers to allow infinite flexibility and learning.

If folks want a device that's true plug and play, there's a million totally unhackable, totally uncustomisable devices out there to satisfy that requirement.

 

Do you guys use docker or something else?

Wouldn't mind moving away from dietpi and having my core high seas tools running in containers

Any suggestions for a diestro lighter than dietpi to run docker through?

 

Had no idea what dietpi was, so I googled it.

Debian with a bunch of stuff. Makes no sense to me. Why not just install Debian without all the stuff?
