somewhere government, or a bank or something
The only real difference is that now it is hidden a lot better.
OK. I think we've all made this the retro I MEMBER thread!
So shall we go with something along the lines of:
Things now retro, important anniversaries and discussions?
If something has just become retro, post here and discuss. As long as it's tech related (can be done on, with or by tech and is 10 years old) it's welcome.
If something is older than 10 years, but is important in some way.. Like for example Atari turning 50, or 30 years since Commodore went bust. That sort of thing.
If we don't want an I MEMBER things that are now retro thread, lets just keep regaling each other with tales of everything we now MEMBER!
this is the entire premise of retro gaming, full on memberberries.
I also made a thread with the "things that just became retro theme" here.
The scary thing is that if you look at a lot of our "Joined" dates, we are retro. Hopefully our kids will remember us the way we remember all these games and things made before they ruined everything.
I didn't see your thread.. Must have been too new for me to notice.
Do you want yours to be the official mecha of recent retro?
if so happy to get this thread closed, or leave it for random member berry postings / rantings!
Edit: Or we could make yours the retro gaming thread, and keep this the retro hardware/software thread?
Powers thread seems to focus on games, so that's where I'll post my gaming member berrys from now on.
But when it's time to relive the glorious ATI 5850, it's going in here!
A real shame
My home internet is about 1,785x faster than 56kbs..
Happy 10th birthday Windows edit: 7 not 10, it seems like just yesterday I was excited to try the release candidate.
Here’s to your next 10 years because people refuse to upgrade.
Hard to believe people’s baby is now double digits.
Indeed, happy birthday to Windows 7! Win10 not retro for a while yet. Still using 7 here.
So 7 is 10.
Geddit?? Huh, huh?
I'm here all day people.
With all the 7’s and 10’s and 7’s turning 10 and 10’s that will turn 7 I get confused
Steam is 16, and we still use that. #trollface
AMD’s 5000 series is 10, actual date slipped right past me.
(That’s the HD 5000 not the RX 5000)
Y’know, the GOOD 5000 cards!
Pretty sure the 5000 series was the last to carry the ATI branding.
Seems like yesterday when you could grab a 5850, unlock it to 5870 performance and smack the shit out of any GTX 400 series for 2 3rds the price, while using half the power at a quarter of the heat.
Now look at them...
I want ATI BACK
OOOH THEY HAD DESIGNERS THEN!
That was actually amd, the last ATI card was exactly as they are currently, expensive hot and not as fast i.e. 2900xt
AMD owned ati at that stage, but the ATI branding was entirely gone after the 5000 series
10 years, god damn!
Yes, I had a 5850 on water, it clocked higher, than my mates 5870 (over 1Ghz) , so they were neck and neck . Many a BC2 LAN with those cards! I don't believe you could actually unlock the shaders though - it's just they didn't scale well beyond 1440sp, and would clock better with less.
They were no match for the GTX480 though in outright perf (except in a few games) , but they were damn close, and out for 6months + before the 400 series even hit, so yeah, a big win for AMD, and as you say massively more efficient.
As for your longing for the past.. Navi isn't a bad architecture - they've made huge ground over Vega, and personally I think the significance of it has just been overshadowed by the hype that surrounded Zen.. Bouncing back doesn't happen overnight, but if they can keep momentum up they'll get there.. Nvidia may stumble again like they did with the before mentioned 400 series - you just don't know whats around the corner, and its these hiccups that can push the competitor into dominance again.
Look at AMD vs Intel now. People laughed there arses off at the concept of AMD ever being able to compete with Intel again back in the middle of Bulldozer-Excavator days, Said Zen would be another total failure, and Intel would never slip up again. Now they look like complete fools.
I (Like you probably) have been doing this for 30 yrs.. and one of the things I still find amusing is watching people forget and / or be ignorant of the past ,then try and predict the future, and cock it all up..
I was in the skeptics camp on Zen for a bunch of reasons, and now I run one in my primary PC.
But I think most people who weren't insane like a certain banned member were more concerned about AMD's ability to deliver given budget constraints and how far they had to go to catch up. Intel stuffing up, or running into a process wall as has happened was always a possibility, they were drip feeding for years even before that.
I predict Oracle to win the quantum race and we will all be getting it in the proverbial from Larry Ellison for our sweet quantum gaming rigs.
