    BOW TO ME PEASANTS!

For I cool my HDD with SSD!

    wtf you say?

    so I have the following:

    https://www.pccasegear.com/products/17719/vantec-nexstar-se-mrk-525cru2-dual-2-5in-sata-hdd-rack

    & one of these:

    https://www.pccasegear.com/products/14722/seagate-momentus-xt-st95005620as-500gb

and a spare on of these:

    https://www.pccasegear.com/products/19276/intel-520-series-120gb-ssd

so.. the momentus XT gets a little toasty in the vantec when transferring data, about 48C (I know I know, still within spec).
The z-height of the bay within the vantec is quite generous.
The Intel SSD, that black ring you see in pic, is a plastic 'bumper' screwed on, to increase its z-height, so if it's installed in a bay that has lots of clearance, it fills it up nicely so that it doesn't 'flap about'. Remove it, and the SSD takes up less space.....
I took the plastic bumper of.. and what do you know, the space remaining in the bay where the momentus is installed, is the exact space filled by the Intel SSD sans bumper.
Now the SSD, with its alu body, is cooling the busy momentus.

Yes, that's right, a SSD as a heatsink.
    Ghetto? probably not.
    Fancy as fuck. yup.

edit: momentus temp is now 37C whilst transferring data... #winning

    Cool story bro.
See previous instructional post re. attaching pics.
    ;)

EDIT: From an engineering standpoint, nothing about the phrase "SSD as heatsink" is good. In any way. Even a ghetto way. :Paranoid:
Edit2: Yes, okay, I note that the temperatures involved are about the same as a lukewarm bath. Probably not going to shorten lifespans too much.

Rearmost red is the power LED. Black momentary switch is a reset button. Red momentary switch is the power button. All set into a chunk of closed cell foam, cut with a bread knife...

That particular board had a CLR/CMOS button so I didn't bother with one of those remoted :weirdo:

    Cool story bro.
It looks like a bar of fancy soap.

    :lol::p

(Seriously, I quite like what you've done there.
Feel free to take over management of this thread at any time, You've pretty much been keeping it alive mate...

Side note, looks like I'm moving from my current and fairly cramped quarters shortly, to a place that might have room for a reasonable project/workbench space... so maybe I'll be able to contribute to my own thread again soon...)

 Dad jokes are never acceptable but once you get to great grandad it becomes 'meh, ignore the old fart, he's a bit vague these days' and you can get away with it

Most of my ghetto is just part of being tight and lazy, but thanks anyway ;)
