I've driven 12V AC LED downlights using a H-Bridge and a small arduino. The same circuit driving a pump should work fine too. The H-Bridges are dirt cheap and an Arduino Nano or Digispark (ATTiny85) would be more than sufficient.

Not only cheap but also reliable.
There's another reason why AC is used for all the 'outdoor' things, corrosion.

I was able to return the bunnings pump - so no dramas there. thanks for all the advice.

The windscreen washer pumps work fine, but I'm at the limit of how many "sprinklers" I can run from them. So I purchased the cheapest 12v caravan pump from ebay to test with - it arrived yesterday and from my initial testing it looks good!

Its been fun playing around with this stuff. Once I get it up and running I will post up some pictures in the lifestyle forum, I'm sure there are other people curious about setting something like this up.
