i think the key word is "operate". they arern't even close to operational weights when doing a display at an airshow and hence can take-off/land in much less distance. (1km for a jet of that size is really short btw) I fly 737's and the shortest runway we land on is about 1.7km and we certainly dont muck around with a smooth touch-down on that runway.

C17 are impressive aircraft, and they certainly know how to put on a demo where ever they are.

I was going to go, but after I saw the weather forecast, I decided not to. Though I did miss out on this http://www.jetphotos.net/viewphoto.php?id=5839195 .

Just for completeness' sake, that helicopter in that second last photo should be a Republic of Singapore Air Force Aerospatiale Super Puma. They have a detachment based out of RAAF Oakey. It is interesting that they've retained the auxiliary floatation devices despite being based so far inland.

Hmm, I was under the impression that it was an Aussie helicopter. I'll go through my photos and see if I have any others of the same helicopter and what sort of markings they have on them.

It's an AGM142 Have Nap (also known as a Popeye)... air-surface standoff missile.

I think they are in the process of buying 3 of them. I think they can each take two abrams tanks and a few other things but I'm not 100% certain.

nah, we are getting 4, and they only take one abrams tank, loaded up with ammo/fuel/armour/crew - everything ready to go, leaving 13,000 odd kg's to spare.

The USAF C-5 Galaxy's are the ones that can take multiple Abrams, those planes are HUGE!
Check out the USAF site for some awesome photos (and alot of mundane PR shots  )

Who ever took that is quite lucky as that compressor explosion or whatever it was didn't last for very long.
