Awesome, but a bit hard to believe.

I can believe in that working for the devs etc - for all the interesting work. But who's doing all the brain numbing repetitive tasks like billing / support?

Perhaps they outsource the comparatively mindless stuff.

someone's gotta be bottom of the stack
when you have these ranking systems.
Still even if you're at the bottom you're probably
getting paid more than in a similar role.

Looks like a recruiting drive for sure
Have you ever tried to communicate with valve billing/support outside of the steam system?

I wouldn't be surprised if their support staff are just wearing out their carpet moving their desks around all day.

From my own experience, good companies tend to pay less, and leverage the "we're a good/famous company so you get more than money out of us".

I was offered a job at WetaFX a few years back, and the pay was pretty ordinary. Factor in the fact that I'd have to move countries to work there, and it really was about getting an awesome resume entry, and not the money.

Yeah I heard the same thing about apple.
Pay's not that great but an impressive resume
and career builder. Plus the fact that because they're so selective
if you got in, you can move anywhere else

Now, if only the same could be said about a certain developer who recently released and broke (and then broke some more), a first person game based on fields where you do battle...

I reckon valve employees would be paid pretty well.

I doubt there would be people in development positions there earning under 80-90k at the worst, probably mostly over $100k.

And what evidence are you basing this on?

I wouldn't assume so... I'd imagine that they are probably around market rate for said position. The beautiful thing about brands, is that they attract talent, in contrast to big $$$.

Basing it on the pay rate of friends in senior positions at other high profile American developers such as Epic and Blizzard.

Also you need to remember that those guys often get big bonus's after a game ships.

I would imagine it would be very odd for Valve to pay below the market rate.

Just between you and I, I wouldn't get out of bed for $100K if it meant doing the hours that guys from Epic and Blizzard are expected to do.
