VIA vs. Realtek onboard sound

    Almost all the on-board sound motherboards I've had in the past are Realtek, and they do not sound too bad with my Z5500, so I would pick Realtek :)

    Oh and if I was to chose one I would say Realtek. I have had both since Asus used to use VIA and now Realtek, the Realtek drivers are better.

    Using optical out, i can't hear the difference between an Xfi and Realtek 889. I'll have to try a Xonar U1 on for size.

    using optical it will sound exactly the same again.

    Every onboard soundcard I've ever listen to has been complete rubbish compared with even a $15 audigy. Fair enough if you dont have a spare pci slot or use digital out but damn guys why would you ever run onboard???

    Did you read anything that was posted? If your passing digital to an external DAC or amp, onboard or dedicated makes no diff.
