Enjoy and leave comments on the video page!

Quite interested in what differences others can hear.

You really need to use headphones though! Your average PC speaker won't allow you to hear all the detail...

Choose at least 720p as well!

#1, ok, but really shows as an 8bit card.
    #2 much better but bassy
    #3 better, ok.
#4 better again, and reflects the right amount of bass and gutteral voice that reflects the space cats. :) At first I thought it was pretty crappy compared to #2, but I listened between them again and listened for the depth, this one had it.

I listened through my cambridge soundworks speakers. Better than phones.

    Excellent

This is what I got out of it:

    1. Second most noisy. SB 1.5 had no low and high pass filter and you can hear that. Very bright.

    2. Most noisy. But sounds 2nd best IMO

    3. Almost least noisy. Sound a bit "damp" though

    4. Least noisy, but very close with 3. Biggest difference IMO is that it doesn't have that slight "cutout" when someone stops talking. It's quite subtle though...

    Using AD300s

    really cool!

    lol@ the dialogue.

Anyway, the filtering are evident between the 1.5 and the pro. the 1.5 has loads of audible aliasing.

The ESS Audiodrive has too much low pass filtering

When it comes to the AWE, the actual source (the game) is likely the limiting factor as it's not really an improvement over the pro

    Yea!

I just listened to DOSBox and it's super clean. No noise of course, however it also has that "cutoff" sound right after someone stop speaking. Its almost a faint click and all cards, apart from the AWE64 have it.

EDIT: I found the Pro to be the most noisy out of the bunch which surprised me a bit. The lack of noise in the 1.5 really really surprised me... No "computer thinking" sounds whatsoever

    Of course!

My thinking (when I cut the video) was there are so many DOSBox videos on YouTube. Pretty much every walkthrough / longplay / into / review is done through DOSBox.

I would like to cater for the small audience interested in how the real thing sounds

Was the speech in WC2 stored at 8 bit res/11khz or 8 bit/22khz?

Not sure... But it was one of, if not the first game to have so much speech in a game. After all this was 1991 :D

PS: I can't believe it's been almost 20 years :upset:

likely 22khz at best given the age of the game, and the amount of voice in it.

44khz.16bit would take up too much spaceback then!

it's cool man - it's only been ~3 dog years.

I for one can't get over how awesome 'adlib compatible' soundcards run on today's machines ;)

although I haven't played this game for at least 15+ years... I DID play it a huge amount, when it came out...
I think we had a 486sx25/4meg/Adlib card... and eventually a SBPro.

and funny.. after all this time.. I can't believe I *knew* the intro speech word for word.... as they were saying it.. I could almost talk along with it!

I must have watched that so many times back then!

    ditto with Dune II

    :)

ZOMG..... my childhood comes flooding back, this was my single fave game ever. I remember comparing the stats on these cards and earlier one, this one is 86dB S/N this one was 90dB ... this one did 16 Midi voices, this did 32.... and when PCI hit the market wow was a difference ;-)

I think he meant the other direction, ie, one year for a dog is equal to 7 human years.
