Ok, the title sounds like a stupid question, but my question is valid; hear me out!

    I can run Vista with a 1x 1GB DDR400 (PC3200) stick

    or

    run Vista with that 1x1GB PC3200 Stick and a 1x512MB Stick (PC2700).

Problem is that if i go for option two with more RAM, the speed will be at PC2700, rather than PC3200 due to the bottlenecking 512 Stick.

So really for Vista and gaming, what matters? That extra ram speed or extra memory ram?

    (Specs: P4 2.8ghz Northwood)

I'd go for the extra ram that makes it a slower speed. More ram is better than faster, but less ram.
And depending on what you're doing, my Vista ran fine with 1 gig.

I would go with the extra ram and sacrifice any performance benefit of higher spec ram. PS; Ram is cheap.

I have a Core Duo laptop that has 1GB of ram and its a joke. The system with MSN open and some gadgets uses 70% of my ram.

I would not recommend Vista to anyone with less that 2GB of ram.

Yep, I was forced to use vista on a core 2 duo laptop that only had 1gb of ram.

Compared to my dad's athlon xp with windows XP it was pretty sluggish. I wouldn't use it with less than 2gb

I agree, Vista is pretty memory hungry, and you want to be able to actually do stuff on your computers so 2GB is the way to go. Especially if you want all the bling on.

on vista, you will benefit with more ram over the speed of the ram, get more of it if you can.

For gaming I wouldnt bother :)
I played Oblivion on medium settings under XP and it was okay but trying to play it in Vista, I think you drop and average of at least 10fps, unless your running a beast dont bother with Vista for gaming.
