this was posted in another forum but i felt it was appropriate to make another thread here, it's Bill Gates 90 minute keynote from CES 2006, with LOTS of info on upcoming microsoft stuff, starts off a bit slow but yeah further on there's a look at alot of great new stuff. i was particularly excited by messenger live, media center vista and cable card boxes oh and they announced officially HD-DVD for X-Box 360.

I'm impressed, I'm slightly looking forward to Vista just a bit more now. Still watching it got up to where the nerd is explain music but it's way to hot so I'm taking a break and going for a swim. Thanks for the link man.

Messenger Live isn't that much different to normal MSN Messenger. There are the odd changes, like the ability to leave offline messages and you can also "appear offline" and still message people. A couple of other small colour changes and there you have it. Although I am only running the beta, I am sure it will be vastly different when it is eventually released.

MSN Messenger is the fucking shittiest IM program ever. Even the original versions of ICQ where you could backspace over your own already sent messages was better.

I honestly cannot understand why so many people love and use the program. It's not at all customisable, it crashes periodically, and has massive stupid menus and buttons that take up WAY TOO MUCH screen real estate. I run 1280x1024 and I can have maybe 4 conversation windows open at one time, and that's using ALL 1280 by 1024 pixels.

    It's a disgrace.

That said, the inbuilt games and support for voice and video conversations is probably the best available. It's a shame that it's so fucking chunky and cumbersome.

If anyone wants to try it, I have a few beta invites available. I'd think that most of you would already have it though.

have to point this out, messenger live is a part of WINDOWS live, which is a whole other animal to just messenger, messenger is just the tip of the iceberg (has anyone noticed the alert me for new video's option) this is triggered by RSS, also there is going to be subsription services you can "chat" to on msn in the future it links up with msn spaces too, lots of stuff all coming together with live...

watching the whole video the dude sees what his mates watch on tele he then sees a show that he's interested in and the messenger service asks him if he wants to see a trailer, now this will be good for noobs but yeah looks cool, i already have watched a couple of new videos that popped up and i must say it was pretty damn cool i would not have seen these if it wasn't in messenger live (one REAL put off was the ads!! but at this stage you can skip them)

True that. It's all tied in together. If you watch the whole video linked to earlier, you'll see what it will eventually mean. Some of the things are just amazing.
