    Hi All,
Recently I purchased a new HGST 8TB drive from an Amazon store, to add to my server which currently has 3x 8TB drives . I've added it to my ESXi Host and passed it through to my storage VM, but it's not appearing like my other HDDs?...

The drive is clearly marked 8TB, and in ESX it appears the same size as the other 3 drives. Windows and ESX both see it as 8TB. I formatted them the same way as other drives in the past, but if I'm reading it right it looks like the new drive is actually 2TB?

Looking at my drives in Linux, I get the following (new drive highlighted in red).

    rod@nebula:~$ sudo df | grep /dev/sd
    /dev/sda2 10252564 6338932 3373116 66% /
    /dev/sde1 2145758124 1858158476 244633612 89% /mnt/DISK4
    /dev/sdd1 7810506124 7131583728 522625508 94% /mnt/DISK2
    /dev/sdc1 7810506124 7144490344 665999396 92% /mnt/DISK1
    /dev/sdb1 7810506124 6060547988 1593661248 80% /mnt/DISK3

    rod@nebula:~$ lsblk | grep sd
    sda 8:0 0 10G 0 disk
    +-sda1 8:1 0 1M 0 part
    +-sda2 8:2 0 10G 0 part /
    sdb 8:16 0 7.3T 0 disk
    +-sdb1 8:17 0 7.3T 0 part /mnt/DISK3
    sdc 8:32 0 7.3T 0 disk
    +-sdc1 8:33 0 7.3T 0 part /mnt/DISK1
    sdd 8:48 0 7.3T 0 disk
    +-sdd1 8:49 0 7.3T 0 part /mnt/DISK2
    sde 8:64 0 7.3T 0 disk
    +-sde1 8:65 0 2T 0 part /mnt/DISK4

I loaded 1.8TB of data on it before noticing the partition maxes out at 2TB, and that data seems fine.
Reformatting with fdisk results in a 2TB partition again.
Attempting to reformat with GParted (latest version) gives an e2fsck error.

Putting it in my windows machine to try to format, I get this:

It appears as if it has 2x partitions (even when I delete all partitions) - one usable 2TB partition, and an inaccessible ~6TB.

Was I sold a fake? (Or can anyone think of another possibility?)

Oh FFS, I should have thought of that.

Seems like fdisk isn't GPT aware? Didn't affect the first three drives though...
