I would want a seperate EQ for surgical stuff and Compressor, or some kind of channel strip.

Are you using a DAW as a host? If so your stock plugins will already work.

For just voice-over type work and not singing a combo of either of these will work.

    EQs -

    Q10
    Renaissance EQ
    F6 Dynamic

    Comps -

    Renaissance Comp
    DBX 160

    Channel Strips -

    Scheps Omni channel
    Renaissance Channel
    SSL channel strips

    Yes all Waves plugs.

What software will you use to run the plugins?

I see, Ableton is a DAW itself, so it will have its own EQs/Comps etc., so you can do everything with it already.

Probably not gonna make much difference which plug-ins you choose for free, as you might end up using different ones in the future so no stress, just get what you think you want.

Once you start messing around with audio you will develop your own workflow anyways and go down the rabbit hole of VSTs.

If you prefer a subscription based plug-in service check out Plugin Alliance, killer stuff.
