Usually I just get Gordon's; I'd like to try something different, but not the really expensive ones.

Bombay Saphire is pretty spanky for the price (ie. not too much :))

Definitely Bombay Saphire, this just about always gets recommended by friends of mine. Bombay is about $41 or $42 a bottle iirc.

Personally I'm a cheapskate and I go for houndstooth, it tastes ok.

gordons is the usual "cheap" gin i drink.

as already said, bombay saphire is good, but tanqueray is probably the best ive tasted personally (although i havent tasted all that many gins)

Bombay Sapphire and Tanq Ten are two quality gins that don't cost the earth (especially duty free).

Tried a nice Plymouth gin at a cocktail-making cuorse few weeks ago (can't remember which one sorry).

    Cheers,

Tanqueray, or bombay sapphire. Personally I prefer tanq, my best mate prefers sapphire. Each to their own. Bombay sapphire's just flavoured with juniper berries, tanquerey has some other botanicals in it

Either of them *walk* all over gordons, and arent that much more expensive (~$40ish a bottle)

Somehow I think you mean tanqueray, not tanquerey ten. Ten's easily double the price of bombay sapphire, it's like $80 a bottle, probably $65ish duty free (not that it isnt superb, it's just a bit pricey)

sapphire and tonic as a warhorse I love to drag out when going out for dinner or tapas. Great with a nice wedge of lime in it! Gordons is perfectly drinkable but sapphire seems to me to have a sweeter flavour overall.

Bombay Sapphire, as everyone else says, is the business. Also worth mentioning is the New Zealand made South Gin, which is made by the guys who make 42 Below vodka. Very nice stuff.

Try Plymouth if you haven't already. It's about 15 bucks less than Bombay and many would argue superior in many ways... only complaint from me is that it's not quite as bitter as Bombay (it's almost sweet and has slightly different taste/aroma... it's also very smooth and almost creamy. Great in a Martini =D).

Similarly I'd rate it above Tanqueray and probably on par with Hendrick's (although not as strange). Miller's is also pretty good if you want to shell out for it

Think you got this the wrong way round. All gins have juniper, but sapphire is known for adding botanicals (10, according to the website) in its infusion process and having less juniper. The cynic in me says Sapphire is so popular is because its everywhere as 'the' top-shelf gin, and the bottle looks so cool.

Like nEBUz says, try Plymouth

Ahh, I could well be wrong on Sapphire then. I'd never looked into its ingredients that closely, just drink the stuff when someone else has bought it mostly (my best mate or his gf usually). Tanqueray, however, also has several other botanicals in it apart from juniper berries. And yes, no doubt there is an element of that in its popularity. But on the other hand, you can pretty much guarantee any bottle shop will stock sapphire, so it's a convenient fallback you-know-it's-adequate gin.

My favourites are Hendricks, South and Ten - all very nice, but sadly a bit costly. Never drink them with lemon or lime, always cucumber - it's a completely different drink, much more pleasant.

The brand ambassador for Hendricks was doing the rounds in some Sydney magazines recently, and his new thing is 50/50 gin and water. OUCH!

There's also a relative unknown floating around in some bars at the moment, called Aviator - it tastes a little bit like petrol. I've not acquired the taste for it yet. :)

See thats what i thought!! but everyone i was with seemed to be enjoying it - and normally i respect their judgement. but i thought it was just belgh.

Tanq 10 duty free from tanzania is about $40 (US) - got a friend bringing back two bottles every 6 months for me.

Hendricks is a nice drop - but i'm not a fan of it just on ice.

Tanq normal by itself can taste a bit....soapy? don't know. depends how many you've had.

and Gordons...well...i'm not a fan. maybe in cocktails where you can hide the taste. with tequila or something. or road tar.

What more can i add? nothing

The best 2 have already been mentioned. Do not touch Gordons if you dont have to.

I myself have both at home and depending on how i feel depends on which one i drink

I cant believe people recommend Bombay gin...

Gordons gin shits all over it. Bombay is like the WORST gin ever. I drink gin religiously and I'll never use my money on Bombay.

Probably cos pubs and bars pick it up on the cheap and most pubs and bars serve it up when you ask for a g.n.t.

Most people ive spoken to who recommend it haven't even tried anything else.

Personally i drink Citadelle, Tanqueray or Gordons.

Yeah, I think Tanq is supposed to be more citrusey and Bombay more herby, I can taste the bitter citrus peel oil flavour a bit more in Tanq, but that could just be my imagination. Tanq has a nasty hospital-disinfectant type aroma (for me) which I'm not too keen on though..

Nothing wrong with Gordon's, its got a lot of juniper compared to Bombay so it might not be to everyones taste. G&T is all about the juniper though!
