    Hi all

aside from checking the status of social media/email, surfing the web and reading ebooks, what do you guys use your iPads for? I'm feeling like this device is very useless to me. The big screen is nice but touch screens are too limiting to do any actual real work on (so it can't replace my laptop) and my phone beats it for functionality as its android (in my opinion). What geeky things do you guys use it for? Can it interface with an arduino to make a high tech remote control?

I don't have an ipad, just a different tablet thingy. I use it in the kitchen to put recipes up and instructions for machines and kitchen info. :D

I have a Nexus 7 and a Dell Inspiron 11 tablet-laptop-hybrid. The Dell does everything better, is more convenient and has better battery... so the Nexus hasn't been touched in a long time.

Just the odd bit of web browsing on the couch/ bed, and mainly because the sites/ forums I frequent don't play nice on my Winphone. The older generation like them and grab them in preference to smartphones but eh, none of my peers bother with tablets any more

The trouble is both the iPad and Android tablets are over grown phones, and with modern phones having quite large super high res screens - why bother.

In addition to what others have said I also used:

    • Microsoft Remote Desktop app to access my Windows servers when I can't be bothered grabbing the laptop.
    • Server Auditor app - SSH console to trouble shoot my Linux servers
    • Plex - What and sync media content for offline viewing with my Plex server
    • Google Earth - Import KMZ files converted from 12D to overlay road alignments and enable me to work out where I am in relation to the design drawings when I'm doing site inspections
    • Adobe Acrobat Reader - Carrying around design drawings on the tablet rather a big bunch of files
    • eBay App - Using the barcode scanner in the app to quickly search for items in the eBay catalogue to pre-populate item description and find pricing info on identical items when listing an item for sale.
    • web browser - Controlling my Argus TV server and every other device/server with a web interface
    • HP iLO Mobile - Access the console and management interface of my HP server

Mainly for when I'm out of the house....holidays, at the office, waiting in the car for someone or an appointment etc. But just for the usual things, checking emails, browsing, little social media, news.

But also increasingly using it for work. Rather than printing out meeting agendas, notes, attachments etc...or making meeting notes......I'll use the ipad instead.

As a kindle as well - love it being backlit. Download through the kindle, sync and win!

Mostly for navigation purposes whilst flying. I use Ozrunways, basically the ipad replaces a suitcase full of paper maps. Also, indispensable whilst on holidays.
Great tool, but I still hate Apple & their "bullshit" marketing approach!:Pirate:

As an iMessaging device when i'm on holidays, for maps and travel in general. Also as a photo-dump for photos taken with my camera.

While at home it sits and collects dust.

Mines a Mini, no idea what i'd do with a big one. When i'm at home my laptop does all of the things, if i'm not on the move I just find tablets annoying to interface with.

I could have one if I want - there's 3 under my desk.

I choose to have a Nexus 9 instead.

I should sell mine (or hand it down to one of the kids). iPad Mini 2 which mostly gathers dust.

Given I have an iPhone 6+ there is little that I can't do on that which I can on the iPad. There has been some games that have been better on the iPad, but these are few are far between (as I don't play many games).

For real work I always end up on my Mac (or the work PC), hell even some simple things I end up on the Mac because they are easier (and only a few steps further away anyway).

I know plenty of people who seem to love them and rarely use a full computer anymore. But they tend to be email/facebook/twitter/instgram/browsing users with few other requirements.

I'm pretty sure your work and mine operate on different principles then, I'm free to use one of these for myself if I really wanted to.
