Gauntlet was awesome! But I think he said it was side scrolling.
Castlevania is everything you described... except the 20c machine...
AFAIK it was a NES only title?
That's what came to mind, too. But I was thinking of Ghouls 'N Ghosts on SNES.

Are you talking about the sequel to Constructor, Constructor: Street Wars?
What region do you play in, as it may be called something else outside of your region.

Was it Rygar?
i got a game for my mum years ago it was a vertical scrolling space shooter, you could get different types of ships, weapon power ups etc
i think it started with an R.

i only ever had the trial version of it but it was fun as hell. i want to find it for her again and get the full version and see if i can get it working on win 7 for her!
this was probally 8-10 years ago. im fairly sure it was dos if i remember correctly. it was epic fun, very challenging especially the bosses.
Black Tiger? It was also known as Black Dragon.
Hey I said that! but the OP hasn't been back since to confirm or deny...
Missed your post but it proves that we're both AWESOME because we're most likely right.

Black Tiger \ Dragon. Thanks guys
Jeez.... I used to love that game. Pocket money back then meant moar Black Tiger!!!
Ditto. They had it at the donut shop where I grew up and I used to pump money into that thing. I still love to fire it up in MAME every now and then.
WOOT, ZXR and I *RULE*!!!
Arcade game I'm trying to recall.
Helicopter "sim". I recall the chopper was based on the AH-1 Cobra.
You sat on a platform, which had a pilot-esque seat and a cyclic control in the centre and a collective to your left.
Gameplay consisted of "overhead", shmup-style game play, before transitioning to over-the-shoulder style, 3D-esque control, similiar to Starfox.
Graphics were sprite based. I remember playing this in the early nineties in my local Bingara milk bar, so the game probably pre-dates that time.
That's it! Yay!
