If you have a onboard sound with a digital out, dont bother with a USB soundcard. I have an Xonar STX and honestly, unless you're using really high end gear (which $600 gear is not), the difference in sound cards over stock is not worth the gain you get. I have the Xonar because it has a proper headphone amp built in (and I run DT880 cans with ~300ohm impedance, which require a bit of juice).

Spend more money on the amp/speakers and use the onboard digital out.

Be aware, most "monitor" style speakers produce a rather flat sound, and ive found that most people dont actually enjoy a flat response / sound that those types of speakers aim to reproduce. Have a listen if you can

Aktimate mini+, reviews generally prefer it over the audioengine a5. I haven't heard both and only have mini+ so I'm biased.

Onboard sound varies a lot, personally I found a significant improvement by getting a Xonar ST.

I bought a set of Dynaudio DM2/6 quite some time ago for $600 new, then a $50 amp off gumtree. 1990 or so Teac I think, A4 footprint. That setup would smash all mentioned, more effort though...

Depends on usage. There are a fair few near field sets out there to consider too.

No complaints at the price. For a nearfield desktop setup it's fantastic.
