I'm experimenting with different video aproaches. Less talking in this one, more arty.

I don't know who that is - but there's plenty of collections out there way bigger than mine. :)

It's one of those hobbies where I have brief bursts of enthusiasm and then forget about it for a few months.

Tested 8 IDE drives, all dead. Only one of them will even be successfully auto-configured. Boo. :/

Pretty certain - I've got an IDE cdrom that works on both channels, boots up XP installer just fine. Plus, one drive's details does eventually get detected, the rest of them just sit and never get detected.

I'm open to suggestions though. :)

without trying them on another board, with a different PSU and cables I'd be hesitant to write off 8 drives unless they were given to you as potentially faulty to start with.

Welp, on the current board I've tried different: cables, psu, cpu, memory, vid card and CD/DVD drive. (It helps that I wanted to test a lot of them)

I haven't tried a different board, but I do have a slot 1 PC that I pulled out of the back of the cupboard, so will try that over the weekend.

What makes me suspicious is that the current board picked up the details for one drive just fine, but sits and hangs on the rest. We'll see though.

Not much to do really with an optical drive. Make sure it's set to master with the jumper at the back, but apart from that there isn't much else you can do.

I haven't come across drives that don't get detected though. Plenty of non-working ones, but not one I can remember not even showing up...

Tried one of those usb to ide/sata adaptors? they are fairly cheap and can be had from places like jaycar. If you are nearby to Albury/Wodonga I could lend you mine if you are feeling particularly cheap/tight/broke

That's why I'm baffled and think at least some of them are cactus - one will show up happily, and will try to boot but I can hear it's starting to throw out the click of death. (But it's a Fireball EL from 1998, so not that surprising I guess). And I mentioned the optical drive to illustrate that I was changing almost everything out to be thorough. :) the hd's and the optical are on different channels. The DVD drive does boot XP installer properly, although trying to run Hiren's Boot CD leads to a GrubBoot error... I suspect it's a bit too new for the hardware? I'm not great with software stuff like that.

Thanks for the office, but I'm in Brisbane. :) I'll just test the drives on the P3-450 system and see what's going on...

True, a lot of these Boot CDs don't work well on older machines, they tend to work from P4 upwards though.

    Nice one Shane.

I received an old-school graphics card, a GTX 480 Fermi card. What a beast. Big, hot and loud :D

Had to use a second PSU to get it going, but it works fine. The rear slot gets too hot to tough and the back of the card, close to 100c :)

Oh and then there is this shot:

Yeah, if you're unsure, don't ditch it - two months later, you'll regret it and there's no takebacks.
