Don't know the official name, But I've seen where they are used.
They plug into the punch down blocks on MDFs or patch panels

I am guessing telephony. Theres heaps of these in our new work premises.

Had a look at the MDF and it does fit. What a weird connector.

That looks like a Krone/110 connector (IIRC).

just looked in my ADC Krone bible (TrueNet cat.)..it isn't in there they have similar things but only 4way and by the pics that one is 6way...

if it was Krone there would be a lable on it.

looks like a patch lead for a phone system. does it plug into a PABX at all what is on the other end ?

It's a 3 pair 110 connector, of AT&T/Avaya/Lucent/Commscope (or whatever company owns them now) origin, not from krone. Typically used on 110 frames for phone or data patching.

    I haven't seen a 3 pair one in a while though.

    Hmm 3 pair weird.

Got sick of these things at my old job (working for Avaya) as invariably when something wasn't working properly in the dev/testing lab it was because some other mofo had disconnected/moved etc one of my patches.
