    Hi,

I've been wondering what ingredients make up chicken salt. When in Tasmania recently my girlfriend and I discovered all the fish&chips had chicken salt, or perhaps we came across some dodgy shops. Regardless, it wasn't a taste sensation. For some reason we've wondered what's in it, and can't Google anything about it.

Is all it is just chicken flavouring + salt?

One other thing, does it contain MSG?

    Thanks!

    JB

It's salt and chicken stock. You cook with chicken stock all the time. No biggie about them adding it to salt for flavour.

BTW, it's everywhere up here as well. But you get the choice of either it or normal salt.

I love chicken salt, but that is probably because i very rarely have it. Although i would love to get my hands on some of the salt used by KFC for their chips (unless of course it is just straight chicken salt)

I'm a chicken salt addict. If anyone is really interested I'll post the list of ingredients off my can when I get home tonight. I buy it in the big commercial cans, 800g at a time which is then supposed to be mixed with regular salt.

Defintely has MSG in it and also sugar.

Yeh if you could post the ingredients that'd be great, my girlfriend and I have a weird bet going on around it.

Seems some has MSG in the chicken stock, and some doesn't.

Doesn't Chicken salt come from the ground up chicken legs of chickens that have grown up on a salt pan?

    My sister tells me:

    MSG
    Salt
    Dehydrated Chicken Flavourings
    Colours
    Other Flavourings
    Spices

They are not in the correct mixing order or in order of quanity.

It is not an ingredients list - as I just asked her what is in Cheken Salt!
She is a Food Consultant and does make recipes and works closely with the production of comercial food - unfortunatley she does not have the recipe for KFC Chicken Salt! Doh!

OK here you go, right from the can (note this is commercial stuff, not the stuff they sell in coles/woolies which is different despite the name):

    Salt
    Caster sugar
    Flavour enhancer 621
    Dextrose
    Rice cereal
    Nl flavour ??
    Vegetable powders
    Hydrolysed vegetable protein (soybean)
    Spices
Anti caking agent 554 (apparently doesn't work too well)
    Vegetable oil (soybean)

Few rather generic ingredients listed (like "spices") but that's what's on the can.

KFC chip salt is actually the seasoning sprinkle that was used for their barbeque chickens some time ago.... it's been the same for at least 15 years in my experience.

I'm not 100% sure what's in it, but it seems to be very similar to chicken salt, with a slight tang. You could probably make a close substitute with chicken salt and a small amount of generic BBQ sprinkle seasoning.

Chicken in Chicken Salt? I think not .. far far to expensive .. broiled chicken entrails (maybe) .. freeze dried .. ground into a fine power .. mixed with all number of colours, preservatives, flavours etc ..

    I'm allergic to onion.

I can tell you that all the chicken salt I have ever tasted has onion in it.

My can? Not sure, my sister buys it at her work (a cafe). About $7 for the 800g can. Lasts me at least 6 months.

Try your local take away, they'd probably order an extra can for you.
