Only a "bargain" in the current silly market, but someone might want to know there's an Amstrad CTM640 RGB monitor at the Camp Hill Antique Centre in Brisbane. Looks to be in good nick, but it's $120 as-is, and it's a bit of an awkward environment to try to test in.

What's the appeal when literally everyone has an old phone - most of which can carry multi-hundred-gig uSD cards?

All of the above applies to an older phone except the 3rd party support with some exceptions.

    *shrug*

If it's not making good sense to you, it's probably right that you don't own, or want to buy one...?

Not sure who you're trying to convince here, but I'm sick of spotify subscriptions the same way I'm sick of streaming subscriptions.

I'd like a dedicated device just for music, with content that I own, that will always be available, and not shared with distracting other apps, software issues, or versatility. I just want a for-purpose device.

Replacement, larger capacity battery, plus a bluetooth modification, plus an iFlash adaptor for increased, reliable storage, it works for me.

Why buy any old hardware at all, when perfectly fine emulators exist?

All of that applies to a phone! With non-apple phones, it's even easier! You copy and paste MP3s like a thumb drive and you're done!
    No proprietary iTunes bs.

No it doesn't. A phone is full of apps, a phone is designed for a completely different purpose. It happens to play MP3s but it's not a dedicated device, it won't have a high quality DAC (like the Wolfson in the gen 5 classics), it's battery life will be eaten by all the other functions and sensors it has.

It's not even remotely the same.

I think deep down myne does understand the retro appeal, given all the work they have recently done to recreate a Pentium 2 motherboard that would be crushed in many graphical benchmarks by a $100 Raspberry Pi.

Here I don't use phones much. My computer is my perfect jukebox, just as it has been for over 25 years. Some spotty corporation coming along and successfully taking over music as a subscription service, greatly enriching themselves in the process, can fuck right off. Behind the wizard's curtain it's just a custom radio station you're paying for, for life.
