I love my Chai lattes, especially if the cafe uses chai powder instead of chai syrup.

Do you know where I can buy chai powder from or where the cafes get it from, like what supplier? Not the instant lipton type of stuff that you get from the supermarket where you just add hot water, they taste like crap. I want the type where you can add frothed milk and cinnamon on top. I thought it would be in the powdered chocolate/ malt section in the supermarket, but I can't seem to find it :( The one I see them using at my favourite cafe comes in a tin and the staff don't know where they get it from.

You sure it's a powder they use and not an actual blend of tea?

Also, you can add frothed milk and cinnamon to your supermarket chai powders.

if it was a blend of tea, wouldn't they need to strain it? because they just chuck it in and add milk.

I'm a tea fanatic and I have chai everyday brewed at home, when these chai late's came out I gave them a try and while they are not as good as a home brew, I like them more than anything else from a coffee shop.

Some prefer the vanilla type but if you like the cinnamon flavour, you can get Arkadia Chai Powder which is what a lot of cafe's use.

    They sell it at Coles.

Nothing has ever tasted as good as the chai we bought in India from the roadside dahbas for Rs 1 a glass.
You need full cream milk from brahmin cattle, boil the tea, milk and spices and then strain it into small glasses. I think using a smoky kerosine stove is vital as is the sooty walls of the establishment.

At night the Bang Lassi was good too but you might get into trouble drinking that here :wired:

Here's the recipe that my friend sent me:

There are so many recipes for Chai and you can have it slightly different each time by adding whatever spices you feel like that. Here’s one recipe..

Boil 5 minutes, then steep 15 minutes:
1 Tbsp fennel or anise seed
    16 green cardamom pods
    12 cloves
    1 or 2 cinnamon sticks
    1/4" ginger root, sliced thin
    1/4 tsp black pepper corns
    2 bay leaves
    7 Cups water
4 slices of fresh ginger or more if you like

Add 2 Tbsp Darjeeling tea leaves or 3 - 4 indian tea bags bring to a boil, and simmer 1 or 2 minutes:

    Add:
    6 Tbsp brown sugar
1 Cup milk (I use soy) better to use full cream rather than skim

    Yum!

So I just started getting into chai lattes and bought one from coles which was pretty good (8/10) however I have had better.

Where in Melbourne do you get yours?

Would the indian spice store have a pre mix chai latte? and if so do they have a different name for it?

    thanks

    update:

So I have tried arkadia chai tea vanilla and this is the one I give 8/10 its very good. This is actually a powder where you add milk to it and then top with cinnamon. It has plenty of sugar in there so no need to add.

Today I tried twinings chai tea and I just didn't like it at all. It has a very subtle taste. I added honey but still this didn't help with the flavor.

I saw a few other teas in the supermarket but they will be similar to this one I imagine. I will not be trying these.

There was a lipton powder on special which I may try at a later stage.

Aldi seem to have one as well I will be off there to pick one up later today.

Bondi has a chai they won an award with. It seems like a powdered version I may give this a go next time I head into the city. Anyone else tried it?

Went to las chicas in st kilda they had a chai tea (loose leaf) which was good but not great though much better than the twinings .

Gloria jeans have one you can order however not a take home style tin. I have yet to try it.

    EDIT

    UPDATE 2

Just picked up the aldi version its very sweet and doesn't have much of the intended flavor (4/10)
