Sucks to be a M$ user, maybe now is a good time to look for alternatives that offer more freedom then $. Or break the law like so many do and not pay, which is why MS do the things they do to force people to pay for using their products, which IMO is perfectly fine, if you choose to use their products they are entitled to payment, because that is their business model.

I'm honestly surprised that Microsoft hasnt' made Windows 'free for personal use', at least the home version anyway. Most people probably just get it with their new computer anyway so I wonder how much is really to be lost in the OEM market anyway?

I've activated lots of old machines dating back to C2D using the OEM Windows 7/8w stickers without any issues. They key on this desktop is at least 10 years old, Windows 7 Pro and still good on Windows 10 Pro.

they are making so much subscription money they just don't care anymore.

license is a license. the key hardly matters anymore.

Produkey will show the bios key, if one exists.

Yep, a volume licenced Win 7 key is not accepted for a Win10 upgrade.

This. Or at least bump the pricing down even further so it becomes a token payment. What better way to promote your product.

Yeh it is still very strange it costs over $100 still. Some cases much much more.

If it was around the $50 market I'd consider not buying recycled OEM keys for $10-20. But here we are.

I paid for a key years ago but after an update sometimes it then comes up with not validated.

Every time I call Microshaft and they remotely fix it for free.
Its not long before it asks to activate windows again after an update.

My eBay key still works fine since October even after the recent major update.

    Avoid.

Softwerk Reviews | Read Customer Service Reviews of softwerk.online (trustpilot.com)

Furthermore, they have no open means of contact... not even a web form...

Also, their T&Cs are poorly worded.

I recently purchased a Win 10 Pro USB off eBay for 69 bucks. I was a bit skeptical but it activated just fine.

If the key is in the bios, most Windows 8 & 10 laptops. You can use this utilitity to see it https://github.com/Superfly-Inc/ShowKeyPlus/releases

The link in an earlier post for produkey I believe searches the registry, if the laptop has a fresh installation of windows, you won't find the key.

As people have said above, you can re-install windows using the microsoft download tool created USB and it will automatically select the correct version of windows (home or pro) and install the key. If it is some corporate laptop that was bought without a windows license, then you will have to organise a legit key, or use some workaround with windows 7 etc.

I bought a $10 ebay win10 key for my media centre PC probably like 3 years ago now. It worked fine for 4 months then it said it wasn't legit and had the activate now warning on the desktop for about a year but then after some auto updates the warning went away lol.

So what are these cheap keys? They obviously work and work indefinitely in many cases.
