What do you honestly expect right now?

Large FoV + High resolution headsets require at least a 2080ti to power properly, especially for the average consumer who won't check what they are playing or configure correctly.

A lot of consumers struggle to get their vive gen 1 working nicely due to performance of some games.

The Pimax 5k is the real standard for resolution/FoV/SDE today, but requires powerful hardware to properly enjoy, or at least a lot of configuration.

If someone buys VR and has no clue how to power it they are clearly an idiot.
There is people who have money and want the best experience now. I am looking at Star VR ATM but it seems slow to go into production.
It's not exactly the hardware it's lazy old game developers too. X-plane 11 gets 20 FPS in medium on my 1080Ti in VR. Open GL rubbish. Aerofly FS2 gets 90FPS with 2x supersample and ultra, it looks amazing and runs on Vulkan.

I fully agree with you about the Pimax 5k, it's nice.
But I keep reading about some black dots issue and since I had a Pimax 4k and it was utter rubbish i'll steer clear for now.
I have used one that didn't have the issue though and was impressed, I hate my RIFT now.

$3200 USD buy in, yeah I think it's still a while off.
210 FOV looks good, and AMOLED @ 90 FPS but resolution specs are vague - (16 million sub-pixels?) why do they all do this?
Also "IPD measurement: Yes with automatic SW adjustment" means hardware adjust primarily yes or no?

Not sure why you are calling mainstream gamers an idiot, cant they play VR too? I dont blame them for not understanding and wanting to research everything as VR requires you to do.

I myself find VR more effort then it should be to get things working nicely.

The Pimax 5k black dots issue is related to the very early kickstarter production units and weren't really a big issue anyway.

Why exactly do you want to pay $5000 for the Star VR?

    I hope you have a 2080 ti.

It's coming - Vulkan promised for XP11. Maybe 2023 haha.

No they aren't worth the % gain over my 1080Ti, waiting next GEN. But if I HAVE to i'll buy one.

Considering the Pimax 5k, some black dot issues seem pretty recent in forums.

The black dot issue is due to the type of screen they used for initial production, from memory it was because it was meant to be a touch screen I think?

Its not an issue for anyone with a higher backer number or anyone who ordered outside kickstarter.

the 2080 ti is worth the gain if you are buying a StarVR...

Overall though we don't have GPU's that meet our needs.

So I've gone online today to buy myself a Pimax 5K+
no such thing as a base station? what only rotational tracking?
How do I get full head tracking? I own a RIFT, they say none of the shit it comes with is compatible.

    Fuck Pimax.

It uses SteamVR base stations for full tracking. I guess Pimax can't get stock for them. When Index launches you might be able to buy 2.0 base stations via steam. NFI when they'll be available in Aus though. Other option is ebay or HTC.

Jesus you need to take a chill pill.

The base station sensors are made by Valve, who have not allowed HTC or Pimax to release base stations with their sensors standalone yet.

    So here are your options

    1. Vive Pro Pack for 2.0 sensors (expensive)
    1. 1.0 Sensors from HTC standalone.
    3. Second Hand
    4. You wait until 2.0 base stations launch from Valve/HTC/Pimax.

You should be blaming Facebook/Oculus for using the wrong tech.

Buy a whole new set of HTC station sensors or wait for a WMR model with it's own cameras/tracking that no longer need station sensors.

All of those options suck, why release something without the proper equipment?

You should be blaming Valve then for being dicks about it.

Oculus made the right tech, it's good, they just got screwed.

Oh well, shame Star VR isn't out... give me something good!

"HTC Sells Standalone 2.0 Lighthouses in Japan"

    "FWIW link to other stores:
    Tsukumo: BS2.0 / OG BS

Yodobashi: BS2.0, not in stock as of writing / OG BS, limited quantity remaining
Bic Camera: BS2.0, currently unavailable / OG BS, in stock
Sofmap: BS2.0, taking preorders. to be launched 2018/12

Amazon.co.jp: BS2.0, shipped and sold by Amazon.co.jp, expected to be in stock on 19/01/21
    NTT-X: BS2.0, not in stock"

EDIT: Bah. that was 2 months ago. Now Tsukumo is sold out as well.
    (Remember curved lighthouse = 2.0)

Yes I am frustrated with pimax as well.

Super keen for a Pimax5k and a 2080ti (now that 1080ti are non existant) but BS2.0 and lighthouses are not exactly cheap... Then HTC annouces the Cosmo and I decide to 'wait a bit longer' to see what specs and how good the inside out tracking is with those.

I think Star VR also uses HTC sensor stations instead of their own kit.

They are going to go belly up now anyway it seems, their latest news isn't inspiring confidence.

Oh hold.. Usually that means gonna die. Or maybe I spend too much time on Skyscraper forums haha.

All i want is a cheap lightweight ergonomic comfy to wear + eye tracking ar/vr headset thats 4k 100hz+ and wireless with good battery life
Urgh sigh wake me up in 202x
because its been 6 years and vr is still a fragmented dumpster fire?
we've had 4k longer than that and we still dont have the gpu power to drive 4k 60hz on midrange gpus let alone high end 2000 dollar monsters
ive been waiting for basics like foveated rendering and variable shaders for YEARS and we only have it in one game (Wolf 2)
