So this is a couple of days after the 20l water change.
Still high carbonate, Ph is normal.
    20240507_091637.jpg

Saw this explanation, don't know how correct it is.

    KH (or Carbonate Hardness)
KH measures the amount of carbonates and bicarbonates in water, which affects the buffering capacity of the water. This means that KH helps neutralize acids and prevents your pH from changing too rapidly, which is useful because sudden pH crashes can cause health issues in your fish. Low KH means your water has less buffering capacity and the pH swings easily. High KH means your water has more buffering capacity and the pH level is hard to change.

Think of KH like a trash can. The higher the KH, the larger the trash can. If we overflow that trash can, then a pH crash occurs. Therefore, people with low KH in their tap water often use crushed coral to gradually raise the KH (or increase the size of their trash can) and prevent pH crashes.

the test strips arnt very accurate from what I've read.
can you get a clean sample down to a aquarium shop/LFS and see what they comeback with ?

I got one of the complete API water testing kits coming soon, so I'll test it with that.
It's not out where it'll kill the fish at this stage, the kit should be here Thursday, I'll just give them another 20L water change today..

can you test your tap water and also tap water that's treated with dechlorinator/ager
and compare, as maybe something whack going on there ?

Definitely test your tap water, and treated tap water as MUTMAN suggested.

The test kits are way more accurate, but as you have discovered lighting plays a big part in identifying the correct colour accurately. I also use the Phosphate, kH and gH kits.

I think normal sunny day type daylight is the best lighting for comparing

Did you do that test on fresh out of the tap water? If so the readings could be off (lower pH), as water in pipes is pressurised it can hold gasses. When the water is left standing these will outgas and give you a slightly higher pH.
Might be best to repeat the tests after leaving the water standing for a couple of hours and compare these results also. I don't think Seachem Prime is supposed to effect pH, so maybe this explains what is happening here.

Yeah pretty much, I'll do it again and let the water stand for an hour or so then test again.

so something in the substrate or the filter is pushing the hardness up ....
have you added anything lately ?
maybe something is breaking down ?
past my pay grade now sorry :)

So we had a little medical emergency with the girl a few weeks ago, woke up and her butt was red and protruding, looked like she'd swallowed a pebble or something.
She wasn't swimming much, didn't eat, I left her in the main tank overnight with the plans to transfer her to a medical tank.
But the morning she'd passed the blockage, he butt was pretty messed up, looked like a little blood, she had a good 15cm trail of poop behind her, but wanted feeding.
I gave them peeled peas that day.

Now she's fine again, but I think she has permanent damage to her butt, she's poos fine, but they come out weird, like in stringy clumps.
She's the one who pretty much has eaten all the hair grass in the tank, you'd find it hanging out of her mouth.

not great, but if she is eating and otherwise healthy then maybe her butt will recover with more time

She's back to normal, eating fine, swims all day back to her happy self.
I've been rotating their food more, flakes one day, brine shrimp the next, with 1 day off the food, and 1 day with a little bit of green pea.

But she eats everything compared to the 2 boys (light red on their caps), so it didn't surprise me.
It's why I went with the bigger gravel/pebbles, I read that they'll just eat sand/dirt and get bunged up, guess there was a smaller pebble I didn't notice.

Not far off pulling the hair grass stump out, she won't leave it alone.

I ripped the hair grass out today, found a huge piece hanging out of the girls mouth this morning, I'd say that's what's bunging her up, she's not chewing it, just trying to swallow it.
Found strings in her poop yesterday too.

    No plants besides green algae...

So an update on little miss, since the hair grass is gone no bulging butt stringy poops.
I guess she was filling her stomach with the hair grass and it was getting stuck.
