Just did the upgrade from 8.1 to 10. I went through the download method. My auto update was still on reserved and notify when ready. Install took a while (more so due to low spec pc). No problems so far. All my installed apps seem to working fine (LibreOffice, Chrome, Thunderbird). It seems more of a visual change to me. Everything is working fine.

Yep, the differences are minor. Mostly the new browser (with still limited functionality) and a new email client

yeah, the initial install of updates for like my laptop's freefall accelerometer and touchpad I am ok with being installed....just not the nvidia drivers and in a way it's good that the win 10 report thinks my 980M isn't compatible (because it's not a stock GPU) and so it won't download the drivers.

so i am ok if it download peripheral device drivers....just not display drivers.

also, i would make sure that your chipset's IMEI firmware is up to date cos mine was horribly outdated and it was never updated in the latest BIOS update.

    see link below:

    http://www.win-raid.com/t596f39-Intel-Management-Engine-Drivers-Firmware-amp-System-Tools.html

you will need to find the version that's compatible with your chipset. unfortunately you can't update to a different branch so with a series 8 chipset i can only use the 9.0.x branch and not the 9.1 branch.

even if you're not seeing issues it might be a good thing to update just in case.

Does anyone else have the issue of windows creating a wpsettings.dat file in the "system volume information" folder on every usb stick that is plugged into the computer? I did some searching and the wpsettings.dat file is related to windows phone but I have never had a windows phone nor had windows phone software installed on this machine or any other machine on the network.

It's annoying me that every usb stick that I plug in gets this file and folder created on it. I turned off system restore and it hasn't help.

can the upgrade be blocked if there's a part that isn't compatible as per the report.

I think there is no limitation, you can go back any time, as long as you have the .old file. AFAIK, it's done through “Update & security” and then “Recovery.” In my case, I can't do it anymore, because I have meanwhile change the upgrade to a clean W10 installation, without the .old file.

But frankly, while the actual improvements of W10 over 8.1 are minor, I can't see a reason to go back. Not to a great degree, but it is the better OS.

You should make a real backup of your system drive before you upgrade. By that I mean using something like a aomei, redo backup or clonezilla bootdisk to make the backup.

A real backup will let you go back to your old system at anytime and you're not relying on windows 10 to get it back to how it was if it screws up.

I'm glad it is....I have no use for Cortano, and I said that from the first build.

hmmm....not sure what the deal is here. Nvidia have spec it as a DX12 card so i have no idea why GPU-Z is showing as DX11.2.

I installed google chrome, set it as default browser, no issues. No idea wtf he's on about. Even uninstalled IE11 for good measure. I would use edge over firefox any day to be honest...

exactly, this guy is just as bad as the EU when it came to MS supplying IE or edge as a default browser. It's not that hard to install and set another browser as the default browser.

last i checked no one is forced to use the MS app but people see it like its the only option....jeez h c!

So Microsoft act on one of the big annoyances with previous versions of windows - that anything can change the default program for any filetype or internet protocol by making people do it through the 'Default Programs' settings and now people are upset by it? Damned if you do and Damned if you don't!

For me as an administrator it means that I won't have Chrome/Firefox extensions randomly taking over defaults which haven't been requested - which will save me a whole lot of hassle.

Also, not sure if this has been mentioned (I read this thread pretty religiously but it may have slipped past) - there is no Microsoft Edge in Windows 10 Enterprise - they have been made the LTSB (Long Term Servicing Branch) for windows, and won't get features that are constantly evolving (such as Edge, and future Universal Apps).

You could just go into the insiders program, then purge if you don't like it.

Well just after i updated my laptop and desktop to windows 10 i had a site down for work.

Jumped on laptop and had to use it all day.

No issues thus far at all. Couple of drivers i updated but thats about it.

Only thing i don't like is how you can't turn off automatic updates and you can't choose what updates to install, you just have to get them all. I know there is some troubleshooter download from microsoft i read up on but it should be built into windows for IT professionals to choose if they want an update or not.

    p.s I don't think I'll ever go back now.

Turn off the Windows update service to stop automatic updates.
