    First issue: after Windows update, I found I no longer had volume icon on taskbar. Really annoying. Yes, there's a work-around with + / - keys, but I don't want to use them! I want the old method back.

    Second issue: today, found I had no ability to download! Received this error message:
    This file does not have an app associated with it for performing this action. Please install an app or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Apps Settings page.
    Well, I certainly didn't uninstall the download app. Have read heaps of advice, but can not find an answer that works!
    Can't work without being able to download from net. Up the creek WITHOUT a paddle! This is pre-historic. (Rant over!)
    All help gratefully received.

    Downloads are handled according to the type of file being downloaded. So if you download a .PDF, your system has an association to open a PDF viewer. If you download a .AVI video, your system knows to open a movie player. So, it sounds like the specific type of file you are trying to download has no association. What kind of file are you trying to download? Have you tried downloading a different kind of file, with a different extension (PDF, JPG, AVI etc)?

    Edit: with the volume control missing, try this guide: https://softwarekeep.com/help-center/volume--icon-missing-windows-10

    In short: right-click on an empty bit of the taskbar at the bottom of the screen, select taskbar settings, scroll down to the blue text "Turn system icons on or off" which brings up another box - is Volume enabled in there?

    That's odd... right click taskbar, go into taskbar settings, then notification area and re-add volume button to display always.

    Font files?

    Do you have any office program such as Libre Office installed? If not, try that.

    Zipped files open natively in Windows.
    Right click the zipped folder and select extract all.

    When you download, right click and use "save link as"

    OTF and TTF are "font" file types. We as Users don't directly interact with them. You "install" them to Control Panel > Fonts.

    THE ERROR MESSAGE I GET IS: This file does not have an app associated with it for performing this action. Please install an app or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Apps Settings page.

    Downloading has gone smoothly on this laptop for 3 years. Can I instal the windows method of downloading in case this natural action has been corrupted?
    When I right click on task bar, I am shown a dialogue box to select playback device. I am just trying an option there, atm.

    Picking this up again Agg.
    Yes, volume is turned on in Turn system icons on or off.
    Someone, was it you, suggested purchasing Restoro. I did, but unfortunately I still can't download ttf or otf's. Still getting error message: as type in about twice.
    This morning I downloaded the Media Creation Tool, but again, no joy.
    I am well over the ten days grace given to roll back from Windows 11 to Windows 10. Do you think going back to earlier OS will be of help?
    I'm at a loss as to how an automatic thing such as loading fonts is now unavailable.
    Thank ing you for your time and knowledge.

    I need to confess I was having a few wines and I was told an update/upgrade was ready and I went ahead and did it.
    Can't find where to find what is my current system.

    Ohhhhhhhh.
    That makes a lot of sense now.

    Yes! Go back to Windows 10.
    As long as you haven't done a disk cleanup and removed the Windows.old directory from the C:
    You can roll back.
    Otherwise you'll need to do a fresh install of Windows 10 or by restoring from a full system backup.

    Does system restore give you the option to go back to a time before the update?

    ive never used the upgrade option.

    when i finally decide to change to the later windows i start from scratch with a fresh install.
    i keep older installs intact (ie i use new system drive) for quite some time before archiving to HDDs whatever stuff i want to keep.
    2 cents.
    i actually have archived every prior install I've had since 2005 on HDDs :p from win98 thru to now.

    um, if you don't already know, as a rule it's a good idea to create a restore point.

    When you have the system working as you like it.

    You could kindly explain, step by step, how to roll back or is a fresh install better?

    https://windowsreport.com/rollback-windows-11/
    ->settings
    ->windows update
    ->advanced options
    ->recovery
    ->go back

    also wise to backup all the personal data you have (prior) incase something doesn't work. :p
