Thank you Adamsleath. Have done that. Still receive this error message when I try to download a font: This file does not have an app associated with it. Please install an app or if one is already installed, create an association in the Default App Settings page.

i'd need to google it. dunno what is borked there.

what app/operation is resulting in this message?

    one result from google:
    https://www.minitool.com/news/file-not-have-program-associated.html

downloading a font to where? from where? which app?

type cmd into the search bar on the desktop
    pick run as administrator.
type in the command above. hit enter.

see what happens. (wait for the process to complete) - i'm actually trying this operation out now :p

Can you please follow these steps before doing anything else to show us what your system spec is and what exact version of Windows you are running.

Can you give us the link to what you are downloading please?

Hi Michele, there is no app that is required for fonts. They install to the system, then you access them through Office suites and other text editing apps. There is generally no requirement to open/observe the font files directly outside of text editing apps.

Could you otherwise provide information of where you are getting the font files from and how you are trying to access them that triggers the error message?

Yes, I know there is no app, which is why this error message is so puzzling.

I did type all this in, above, but here it is again: i7-9750H CPU 2.6Hz RAM 32 GB, 31.8 usable 64 bit Windows 10 Home 21H1 OS build 1266

Getting fonts from sites like DaFont and DaFontFree.io; simply clicking the download icon. https://www.dafontfree.io/

I downloaded comic->superman font which was zip
    In the zip was superman.otf
if the fonts are extension .otf they open up in the font viewer software built into windows.
Then you can install the font to the computer to use in your apps.

You can try to reset your file type to default in windows if you don't get the font viewer.

    Thanks

I just went to the site and dowloaded a font.
    I extracted the zip folder
I double clicked a .ttf file and got this

    https://imgur.com/a/xLdToTi

    Yep,

So in my second pic - i searched the bottom left of Windows for "choose a default app for each type of file"
What program does it show for .ttf?

If it doesn't show Windows Font Viewer - click choose a default or whatever program is there then point it to C:\Windows\System32\Fontview.exe
