yeah, it just confuses end users.

it will all come to a head, they just want us all on some cloud vm instance under a sub before then.

Hardware works under Linux until the end of days. Ubuntu say they're gonna drop 32bit support, the community cracks the shits and Ubuntu back peddle! The way things should work.

I'll bet MS are colluding with hardware vendors to get end users to upgrade their hardware or else that "shiny new" build of win10 ain't going to run on your "old" hardware.
But.. but.. my old hardware still works perfectly fine!

Microsoft themselves said Windows 10 would be the last official versioned release, and from here on they're moving to a rolling release model.

They announced that.. what... 3 years ago? More? There was talk about it back before Windows 10 was even given an official name.

You want my crystal ball prediction? Once Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 all EOL, "Windows 10" will just be renamed "Windows" at a marketing level, and that will be that. Rolling release from then on.

They should have made Windows 8.1 > Windows 9.

    8.1 sounds sort of stupid.

Their decision to skip 9 was to avoid confusion/issues with likeness to 95/98.

That's a bit of an insult to the intelligence of consumers. Think anyone can tell the diff between Windows 95 or 98 & then Windows 9. Unless they have serious numerical skill deficiency. In that case, other areas of life will be extremely challenging for that lot.

    Nah, it wasn't that.

It was old programs looking for a 9 in the version number and assuming it meant 95/98.

The fun legacies of joining two trees of compatibility.

Rumour has it too many crappy vendors/developers regexed "Windows9" to match on 95/98 compatibility, so they couldn't use that version.

8.1 wasn't a big enough leap, and 10 was chosen because they couldn't use 9.

    Or do the rumours go.

[edit] Blooming heck, got distracted, my post got posted eons after the above reply.

The only thing I remember about Windows 3.1 is dumping out of the Windows environment to start up a game of Doom via DOS on my 486DX/33..

Any naming scheme version of an OS with a . in it's name is silly imo. :)
