sooo... what was the verdict? does Win8 go hardware? I'm thinking of installing it on a test rig along with an ancient xtrememusic to see if I can notice a diff / kicks'n'giggles

anyone with experience(s) to share? :)

Sadly, I think it's more and more likely this is just gonna be for hardware offloading of things like VOIP chat and media playback to save battery life on the tablets, not anything for gaming.

I'm not sure they'll even bother with it on the x86 tabs, only the ARM ones.

Still, this doesn't preclude other companies from making proper hardware-based sound solutions; however, the sound engine landscape is now so fragmented it would be impossible to work with all high-level APIs. The licencing would be a nightmare, as would the execution.

Think of the physics engine landscape: there are tons of engines out there, only one is hardware-accelerated, and I'm betting that the main reason PhysX sells at all is that it comes free with Nvidia cards. A stand alone SPU would be a much tougher sell.

I'm curious to try out with the STX though I've heard the drivers aren't stable. Anyone have any comments on that?

I've got the Essence ST (pci version) on Windows 8 with no issues using the beta driver.

I've been using W8 and an STX with the beta drivers since they came out. No issues here at all so far. Haven't had a crash or any bugs like that.

I'm actually wondering if Windows 10 is any good for this.

As per usual, we will see approximately eight trillion words written about the new DirectX graphics pipeline, and half a sentence dedicated to audio processing.

There is lots of new stuff coming/in windows 10 audio, not much for games but production wise they've got a new MIDI api and a new WASAPI thingo that has very comparable latency to ASIO with supported interfaces.

I reckon it's always been this way.....audio seems to be largely unsexy and hardly rates a mention anywhere.

You can thank the hoards of mindless gamers for this. The constant push for better graphics at the expense of everything else has pretty much destroyed a lot of fun things about the modern personal computer market (and I mean *market* - i.e.: what marketing people care about, which isn't always reality).

I get more joy today from a Raspberry Pi with a Wolfson DAC attached than I have from anything PC related in the last 10 years.

Having ranted this, what DID Windows 8/8.1 do for dx, games and graphics?

    AFAIK - 2/10's of SFA.

How much better can audio really get though?

I think you'll find the problem is that it got worse, and many people want to see a return to previous form.
