Anyone up for a little friendly competition?

I'm really curious to see which combinations work well together. Please share your experiences!

    Proposed classes:

    • CPU 500Mhz and under
    • CPU 1Ghz and under
    • Open AGP
    • Open

It's probably also worth keeping track of fastest PIII, P4, Athlon XP etc.

    Proposed rules:

    • Must run Windows 98SE
    • Must use 3DMark2001SE Build 330
    • Must run default benchmark at 1024x768 32bit color
    • Overclocking is allowed
    • Unofficial drivers/patches/tweaks to get non-supported hardware working are allowed in open classes, please list what you are using
    • In CPU clockspeed restricted classes the CPU must have been released with an SKU at or below the class speed. For example an Athlon Thunderbird 1.2Ghz underclocked to 1Ghz would be ok as there was a 1Ghz version

If you have any suggestions for adjustments to the rules or classes, please let me know.

3DMark2001 can be downloaded from here: https://www.futuremark.com/benchmarks/legacy
CPU-Z 1.76 can be downloaded from here: http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html

Screenshots should show the 3Dmark score and details window, CPU-Z showing CPU, Mainboard and Memory, Powerstrip/Rivatuner or similar showing GPU/Memory clocks.

    Screenshot example:

Nice overclock on the card, should have just about matched a Ti4600.

I'm working on a 939 setup at the moment, might have some results tomorrow.

Are there X1950XT modded drivers for 98?

I would kill for an Asus P4P800-E motherboard. Best clocker on the s478 platform.

Getting PCI-E cards working is hit and miss on 98, but this combo works really well.

Using the unoffical 98 SP3, with 82.69 drivers to get the 7950GT working.

I couldn't get my 7950GT AGP card to work at all under 98SE, so was surprised the PCI-E version worked.

I have a second 7950GT PCI-E and as it's an SLI board I had to give it a go, but it crashed as soon as the driver was installed. I'm not sure if SLI is a total no-go under 98 or if 2x512mb cards was the problem.

The 82.69 drivers apparently also support 8 series cards, but I had no luck with an 8800GTX or 8800GTS 512. Both would crash on startup with a windows protection error.

Mostly an issue with support being dropped?

Can we add XP SP2 to the OS list of testing/benching? Since you're using modern LGA775 platform.

I tried getting my old Athlon 64 4000+, Gigabyte GA-K8N Ultra SLI and 6800GT PCIe working for this but in the end it just became painful as for some reason boot times would exceed 10 minutes, I did finally get the nVidia drivers installed and managed to get in a single run of 2001SE but the results were less than stellar I must say, ~12500 points. I tried messing around with different HDD's and RAM, but still I couldn't solve the slow boot time issue. Bit of a shame as back in its prime (running XP) that combo with good RAM saw 2001SE figures well into the 20k bracket.

I'm now attempting to install 98SE on my P4 3.0 Prescott, ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe and 6800GT AGP.

I think Windows 98 and 3DMark99 and 2000 go well together. But for 2001 I would just go with Windows XP. It's much easier to install XP on some of these faster machines :)

It's definitely easier with XP, but then where do you draw the line as far as which hardware is allowed?

Restricting to 98SE creates a somewhat random variable at the higher end, with patchy support meaning some combinations seem to work well together while others that might be expected to perform better sometimes don't.

For the proposed 1Ghz and 500Mhz classes 98SE would be ideal.

Without some sort of restriction, there's not much of a "challenge" aspect.

If everyone would just prefer a more open retro benchmark results thread then I'd be down for that.

Gonna try and push the CPU and GPU a little more, might have to invest in a beefier CPU cooler and better PSU though. Overall, I'm pretty happy with the result

So the challenge is getting these old machine to run in the first place. Agreed, that IS a challenge with many of these parts :)
