So after a long vacation and the daunting task to complete Yellow Jacket I turned to a number of fish tanks that I needed to do something with.

Also the fact that while I was away I had a few friends babysit my various tropical fish who have now ask i take them back :weirdo:

My 3ft Tanks to embark in the world of 3D backgrounds is one that grabbed from gumtree ages ago - sadly was not cheap but it had to be 890mm as most where over 900mm which will not fit in the place i have reserved - inside our fireplace which doesn't get used and is home to a possum :wired:

The tank when bought from previous owner and there setup

My goal is to not use Texas Holey Rock anymore in my tanks and use alternate material to create a landscape or background that I like with easy maintenance

I'm not very creative but some of these have inspired me to have a go and doing something similar to these at the below link

So off to start landscaping :Paranoid:

    Underground Filtering - Reverse Style

Since I will not want to move objects around often and will want a sand type bottom I opted to go with a underground filtration but in reverse

The idea of underground filtration has been around for years, but some believe that reversing the process could help eliminate waste bio products building up

I plan attach an old setup i got years ago from a bulk buy and stick a power head on one end and block the other and push the water through the grid and back out into the substrate

First was modding up the base of them so they all fitted in the tank and because i had lost all of the original right angle connected I had to improvise with what i found at Bunnings

Compairing between original and homemade - Perfect :D

Now I got my bottom filtration fitted into the tank and ready to move onto the next phase

Shaping the landscape from styrofoam & polystyrene sheets

So I went out and bought some different sizes to try and see which option I would take, one white stuff came from Clark Rubber the other from Foamex.

After a little reading I heard that extruded polystyrene was the best to use as it doesn't break as easy or create as much mess and normal styrofoam, this is the yellow one

I didn't take pix of the whole sheets of the extruded or the 40mm styrofoam, but here is the 10m

Now to start shaping out some walls and cliffs

    The aftermath mess
    [IMG]

So now I will continue to make show shapes and start building on them and see how it starts to look and shape

I should have taken ART up and school - i can't shape

Using my trusty hotwire that I had to purchase from the USA - I should have made one!

i start to cut out and shape what I think would look ok, so far I have come up with this for one side

I was originally going to make a theme like Atlantis using these pillars but it got too time consuming

Thanks! I too am hoping I can get it finished :weirdo:

Going to add an underground waterfall

Well after playing around with different layers I am going to try my hand at a underwater waterfall

Here are the first stages of the design

Still got a long way to go, next up will be trying to figure out on how to light up the tank with LED

I am looking to you fish heads for idea's and ways to run lighting :) Basically I am looking to light up the tree trunk (Drift wood) and all around the background and also have the hood fluro's as well

What are some good leds that I can submerge and light it up

Can you try making your own?
Led + figure 8 insulated wire + heat shrink + silicon it all together.

If your going to put lights below the water line .. make sure they have their own light switch.

Light sources that don't come from above can cause fish to swim on a lean instead of up and down. Discus and angles especially.

I would make a little led spot light to shine down on the tree trunk from above.
