Thought this one might be of interest to some people.
I recently aquired a 1541-II disk drive, and due to it having the direct-drive Chinon drive mechanism (and being considerably smaller than the 1541), decided to make it my main C64 drive.

What started out a simple drop-in ROM replacement to install JiffyDOS ended up with quite some problem solving. It all worked out in the end, though :)

Anyway, read it here. It gives some idea of what is involved in reviving retro kit.

Nice post dude, very interesting read.

I recently pulled my C64 out of the shed (long winded details here if you're interested: http://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=36418) and bought myself a 1541 and a 1541 II "for parts or not working" with the intention of bringing them back to life.

In the mean time however I've been reading about the amazing '1541 Ultimate II' (http://www.1541ultimate.net/), and have taken the plunge and ordered myself one.

They ain't cheap, but your post is more evidence that I've done the right thing - clearly bringing a 1541 back to life is probably more involved than I thought!

    Have you considered the 1541UII?
