I've been debating over the past year on finally dumping my old xbox, and upgrading to a custom HTPC.
Now this is mainly because I want Full HD playback when the xbox just cant handle it, and im constantly running on a full HDD (and I've read nothing but bad things about using a sata drive with convertor) and I hate trying to stream the media via wireless.

I've done some searching and pricing and found for roughly $400 I can build a new box, but im having a hard time trying to bring myself to buy the parts.

So what did it take for you to finally throw in the towel on xbox?

Pretty much exactly what you said; HiDef content, storage space. Also, as I didn't have the xbox IR remote, using a xbox controller wasn't very elegant.

Streaming (via ethernet) meant two components were chewing power.
