I waited and waited and waited and waited for B550, and finally succumbed and bought a B450 mb instead... only to find that it won't support the last AM4 Ryzen 4000 CPUs, pretty seriously bummed about this one.

I did exactly the same thing. the reasoning seems to be due to BIOS chips being only 16Mb. I'm on one of MSI's B450 Max boards which have a 32Mb BIOS chip, so maybe there is some hope? IMO, AMD has taken far too long to get B550 boards out.

How can you tell how much BIOS memory is has?

    I've got this one: https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/B450M-GAMING-PLUS/Overview

To my knowledge, for MSI B450 boards, unless it's a MAX model it has 16MB. Not sure about others or if it is stipulated somewhere in specs.

hmm my Asus B450-i seems to have a 128mb Flash ROM, so I might be in luck, I only bought it a week ago, I'm tossing up sending it back to get store credit and waiting for B550, June feels so far away though :(

I wouldn't be surprised if the B450 motherboards pretty much just take a B550 bios.
    This still sucks.

If anything just drop off Ryzen 1 from the B450 bios's. Aint nobody using those with B450/x470 boards.

Definitely an option to release a Ryzen 4000 specific bios whether or not they want to spend the money to do it is another thing altogether

Very unlikely. 128mbits = 16mb 99% it's that. 16mb is very common for AMD boards. As noted hopefully they release not official support 'beta' bioses with zen3 support like they did for zen2 and 95% of B350/x370 to get around the issue of older gen cpu support listed on the motherboard box to make space.

I also have an MSI B450 Gaming board. Is this official? I was expecting everything from the B450 up to be supported on the 4000 series, otherwise I might have looked more seriously at an X570. :(

IMO they are literally the same board.. I doubt Asus/MSI/Giga/Asrock will say do a significant rework of say their MITX platforms for b550. These are likely to be the same board essentially. I imagine it will be unofficial, and b450 and x470 products will disappear from channel pretty quickly. There was a lot of stuffing around with B450 and x470 platforms to support the 3000 series. They don't want to have to do that again.

But that was because there was *NO* budget 550 line at launch. Now there is. All b550 will support ryzen 4000 and 3000 (and will probably drop support for Ryzen 1000 and 2000). Because they will have the same small 16mb bios.

    https://www.pcworld.com/article/353...masses-but-leave-older-ryzen-cpus-behind.html

Even some A320 chipsets received bios updates for 3000 series.

I expect the B550 boards to show up pretty soon. June 21st they say. I would expect Ryzen 4000 in Sept. So by the time Ryzen 4000 rolls around, bioses will be everywhere.

Which is significant because AMD said A320 wouldn't even get select/beta support like B350/X370 did, but plenty of mobo manufacturers decided otherwise. Hopefully the same happens again, but who knows until they make announcements.

Well Ryzen 3000 wasn't going to work on A320/B350.... until it did.

Yeah but AMD said select B350 boards would get zen2 support, but A320 wouldn't. And we ended up with some A320 boards having zen2 support as well.

I doubt they will block B450 X470 from the next series. Some may not work, but most should. Heck the PCIe 4.0 issue was AMD's doing. Technically most boards can handle some level of PCIe 4.0. But AMD patched Agesa so that board manufacturers couldn't add support to older chipsets.

Bah. I understand that AMD does a far better job with backward compatibility than Intel, but pretty pissed about this. The X570 was overpriced and had no compelling features at launch and 4 series compatibility was practically promised. Guess I will be skipping that generation now.

I suspect any b450 x470 with 32MB roms will be ok. Otherwise kaput.
