The service at rockpool is in a different league compared to just about every other restaurant i have been.

OH and the steak is excellent as well :)

i also sampled the "Slow Cooked Egg with Bone Marrow on Brioche", because well i had never gone out of my way to eat bone marrow before. and it was also excellent

Nah ravenfiree i'm not a chef ... I think if I were to do that, then all enjoyment would go out the window for me! Some things are better kept as hobbies, wouldn't you agree?

chrispy I can't afford to eat at Rockpool regularly. Which is why I have his recipe book. I've been making his dishes at home, and so far the book has been reliable. The emphasis is on correct cooking technique using high quality ingredients rather than complex recipes. For example - the recipe for roast baby carrots is: toss carrots in 1tbsp olive oil and salt. Bake for 10 mins at 220C, then toss again and bake for another 10 min. This results in stunning fresh carrots which are full of flavour. So far I have made >20 dishes using the recipes in that book and I will be doing more :)

we went to the bluefire grill at docklands a while back... best steak I've ever had, however:

-waitress was completely useless - couldn't take orders for crap
-price was high-ish ($45ish for steak + $5ish for sauce) which was a little dissapointing as it only came on a small bed of potato's

All in all it was just over $100 for the two of us, no grog, but we were left feeling a little hungry - expected a steak with chips and salad or similar.

That said, very nice steak :)

Yeh I've been to bluefire at docklands a few times before and I've always been pretty happy with it. The restaurant isn't anything special and the staff are okay. It's the food thats great. The 500g Tbone is great. Always cooked to perfection.

I've heard of vlados, squires, the meat and wine co and rockpool before. I might have to go check them out when I'm down in Melbourne again in just over a week :) mmmm steak

I tried Squire's in south yarra on the weekend. It was fantastic. Really good steak. Is there a difference between Squire's City and the south yarra one, because they both try and disassociate themselves from each other.

Vlado's isn't that good considering the price...

not sure if the banquet differs to the steak but the banquet was horrible. Pretty bad cuts of meat, some charred on the outside and literally luke-warm and bleeding on the inside...

i disagree.. the price ($80 when i last went with the gf on valentines day) is decent considering it includes an appetiser, entree, main and desert..

most of the places mentioned here charge $30-60 just for a steak

i was very happy with all of the food served at vlados would gladly pay $80 for it all again

anyone here know of any good butchers in northern suburbs melbourne with some interesting or i guess you could say gourmet cuts of steak?

Now that Nobu's David Blackmore Wagyu is $50/50g minimum order 100g, doesn't seem like such a stretch now haha

I'm waiting to go there and have $1000 worth of steak between like 2 people or something, that's real madness!

The book he is referring to is Neil Perry's "The Food I Love". I own it too, and it has made me a much more confident and skilled cook. Can't recommend it enough.

IMO i think South Yarra squires totaly owns the city one... the steaks are a hell lot nicer @ South Yarra... the meat just ZOMG melts in your mouth. City one isnt that bad, but I would prefer to spend my money @ SY

I've been to 'The Grill Room' and 'The Meat & Wine Co'.

Grill Room is the same thing as Squires Loft from what I understand.

Meat & Wine Co has an awesome ambience about it.

    Steaks at both were delicious.

Ahh ok, I went to SY one but never been the city one. I just noticed how similar the websites were.

I've been to South Yarra Squire's Loft, City Grill Room Squire's Loft and Meat and Wine Co.

    I'd rate them

SY == CGR > Meat and Wine Co.

Honestly, I had the $60 Wagyu Rib Eye at Meat and Wine Co, and I felt that the $45 Angus Rib Eye at Squires Loft (both places were fantastic) was a better steak.

I'm meaning to get to Rockpool at some stage to try the $110 ribeye here, just to work out whether its Wagyu and the high marbling or the way they cooked it.

(n.b All Steaks are had "as recommended" by the wait staff)

South Yarra SL feels a bit more pretentious than the City Grill room (although the service might be slightly better as well) but as far as the food goes, I found them equal. SY is closer to me, but the people i go with are closer to the City, so we usually end up there.

Had the Wagyu burger at Rockpool for lunch today. $18 and awesome. Good for a business lunch they can turn the table over in around 40 minutes.

Well I'm visiting Melbourne this weekend. My girlfriends mum and step dad are gonna be visiting too and we're going to check out Vlados. I'll let you know how it pans out.

It's a set menu pretty much. You juts choose your cut of meat. Any recommendations from people who've been there? Eye fillet, Porterhouse or Rump?

    Hey All,

I normally don't post much here but i read this thread a while back while i was craving for some steak. Ended up going to Squires Loft and i gotta say it was fantastic. Great food and good service. Ended up having the 300g eye fillet with mushroom sauce, well worth it for sure.

So if your thinking of making a booking i would highly recommend.
